Oil and gas - self-sufficiency

For many years, Denmark has been producing more oil and gas than it consumes. Denmark is the only country in the EU that is both self-sufficient and exports considerable amounts of oil and natural gas.

This is currently a very favourable situation for Denmark, providing high revenues for the Danish state.

Denmark and oil
Since the 1980s, it has been Danish policy for the state to actively participate in exploration and production in Danish territory.

Today, the state’s new oil company, the Danish North Sea Fund (Nordsøfonden), participates with 20% in all new licences. The Danish North Sea Fund will be a partner with 20% of the Danish Underground Consortium in 2012, thereby providing the Fund with a share in a considerable oil and gas production.
